Halls Outdoor Classroom

What do you do with a row of ugly, flood-prone vacant lots with old concrete slabs and abandoned swimming pools, between a nice neighborhood and a busy high school?

The Beaver Creek Watershed Association, with a number of interested and knowledgeable partners, is working to turn this area into a unique community asset and educational resource. Located adjacent to Halls High School, the “classroom” will include a variety of natural areas for study and enjoyment by students and the general public alike.

Enthusiastic support and leadership is offered by Ruth Anne Hanahan of the UT Water Resources Research Center and the Center’s Tim Gangaware, and Halls High School’s teachers Mike Blankenship and Carrie Coley. Hallsdale-Powell Utility District President/CEO Marvin Hammond has provided financial support and some expertise in design and planning are critical to making the project happen.

TVA has granted funds to purchase plants for the area, Knox County has removed foundations and done some grading of the site. Halls Middle School Students have planted trees and shrubs donated by TVA in the rain garden area. Located adjacent to Halls High School, the “classroom” will include a variety of natural areas for study and enjoyment by students and the general public alike. The Halls High School Outdoor Classroom is an outreach project of the BCWA.
