Adopt-A-Stream
Want to make a stretch of the creek your own? Tired of
seeing trash strewn in and along Beaver Creek and its tributaries?
Want to do something about it? Now you have an
opportunity through the the Adopt-A-Stream Program conducted
by the City of Knoxville, Knox County, and the Town of
Farragut. Adopt-A-Stream is a citizen-based monitoring and
litter prevention program intended to protect the health and
beauty of our local waterways.
The program is simple to join, but there are certain requirements
that must be met to participate. First, gather a group of
friends, family members, or colleagues who are interested in
helping you keep a section of Beaver Creek or its tributaries
clean. Then call Tracy Jones, your Knox County Adopt-AStream
Coordinator, at 215-5811, to sign up for the next
Adopt-A-Stream training, a four-hour training generally conducted
on a Saturday. Your group will be asked to evaluate
impacts to your adopted section every three months and to
conduct two stream clean-ups per year. The program will provide
supplies for your clean-ups including gloves, safety vests,
and bags. It will also coordinate the pick up of your bagged
trash.
If you adopt one quarter of a mile or more, the program
will also provide an Adopt-A-Stream sign with your group’s
name on it that will be located on a road near your adopted
section.
For more information about the program, contact Tracy
Jones or go to www.waterqualityforum.org.
