Adopt-A-Watershed
Adopt-A-Watershed (AAW) is challenging students across the Beaver
Creek Watershed to put what they have learned into action to improve their
local communities.
Now in its eighth year, this program ties classroom curriculum to projects that involve students
in addressing real community needs. Currently science teachers from Gibbs High,
Halls High, Halls Middle, Powell High, Powell Middle, and Karns High participate in this program.
Adopt-A-Watershed projects have ranged from students conducting comprehensive
watershed assessments and using their collected data to educate the public about the health
of Beaver Creek to streamside tree plantings aimed at improving water quality and enhancing
habitat. Each of the projects involve a series of hands-on lessons that then culminate in the
students preparing a product or delivering a service to their community that will enhance the
quality of life for its residents.
The AAW Program is supported by the Water Quality Forum that sponsors summer teacher
trainings and a seven-member AmeriCorps Team that assists the AAW teachers in conducting
this program. Community input and support is sought to identify and conduct meaningful student-
conducted projects. Beaver Creek Watershed Association members are integral to making
many of the projects within their watershed happen ñ providing project ideas, financial
support, and technical and logistical assistance. For more information about Adopt-AWatershed
